Questo lungometraggio è da considerarsi come uno degli esempi più significativi di incontro tra cinema, letteratura e teatro. E’ un film che tramanda il ricordo concreto della più grande attrice teatrale di tutti i tempi – secondo Charlie Chaplin -, Eleonora Duse. Il film è tratto da un romanzo della grande scrittrice e premio Nobel Grazia Deledda. Si tratta dell’unico film interpretato da Eleonora Duse, che collaborò anche all’adattamento, e costituisce la sola testimonianza visiva dell’arte della grande attrice.
Nel rivolgersi ad Eleonora Duse, protagonista e vera autrice di Cenere, così scrive Grazia Deledda: “Lei ha fatto di «Cenere» una cosa bella e viva: ma quand’anche così non fosse, mi basterebbe il conforto di
aver veduto la mia opera passare attraverso la Sua anima e riceverne il soffio vivificante. Ma Lei ha fatto una cosa bella e viva. Lo ripeto: il lavoro è Suo, ormai, non più mio, come il fiore è del sole che già dà colore più che della terra che gli dà radici”.
Marcello Allulli e Giovanni Ceccarelli formano un duo di grande libertà espressiva e di un lirismo ispirato. I due musicisti, a loro volta leader di propri progetti artistici, collaborano insieme da venti anni. Si incontrano negli anni 1990 a Roma e suonano insieme in diverse formazioni, come il Trioakì del poli- strumentista tedesco Aki Montoya (collaborando in concerto con Tony Scott), con la poetessa Francesca Merloni (CD “Elice” – Deca, 2007), per gli spettacoli della regista Federica Altieri (collaborando tra gli altri con Antonello Salis). Marcello e Giovanni partecipano ad importanti rassegne concertistiche e festival internazionali, tenendo concerti per gli Istituti Italiani di Cultura di tutto il mondo. Nel dicembre 2014 eseguono il cine-concerto “Cenere” al “Festival Europeo del Cinema” a Beirut, invitati dall’Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Nel dicembre scorso portano “Cenere” al festival “Sensorium” di Goa, India su invito dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Mumbai. Ad aprile di quest’anno presenteranno il cine-concerto all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Lisbona.
La performance si articola in due momenti: il prologo al film (durata 20 min. circa) con musiche di Allulli, Ceccarelli, Jobim, Montoya, Ramirez, Kern; il cine-concerto (durata 40 min.) con musica composta, arrangiata ed eseguita dal vivo dai due musicisti.
La musica è ricca di riferimenti, dal jazz alla tradizione mediterranea, dall’improvvisazione estemporanea alla canzone popolare.
Il duo nel 2016, anno nel quale si celebrerà il centenario del film “Cenere”, porterà questo cine-concerto in varie rassegne e festival in Italia e all’estero.

This film is considered one of the most significant examples of a meeting between cinema, literature, and theater. Cenere has passed the concrete memory of the world’s greatest theater actress, – according to Charlie Chaplin -, Eleonora Duse. Based on a novel by the great writer and Nobel prize Grazia Deledda, “Cenere” is the only film which Eleonora Duse played in. This film, to which Duse also collaborated for its screen adaptation, is the only existing visual document of Duse’s acting art. It tells the story of a painful and difficult mother-son relationship in Sardinia, beginning of the Twentieth Century.
Grazia Deledda wrote such words to Eleonora Duse, “Cenere”’s main character and true author: “You have transformed «Cenere» into something beautiful and alive. But even if it was not so, I would be fulfilled and comforted that my work pass through your soul, thus receiving from you an enlivening breath. But I repeat, you have made something beautiful and alive. This work is now yours, not mine anymore, as the flower belongs to the sun which gives it colors, more than it belongs to the land which gives it roots”.
Marcello Allulli and Giovanni Ceccarelli form a duo whose features are great expressive freedom and inspired lyricism. The two musicians, who are group leaders in their own right, collaborate since twenty years. They met in Rome in the 1990’s and played together in several groups, as the Trioakì led by German poly-instrumentalist Aki Montoya and featuring Jazz legend Tony Scott. Other mutual collaborations were those with Italian poetess Francesca Merloni – in her CD “Elice”, 2007 -, and with film and performance director Federica Altieri – featuring among others pianist and accordion player Antonello Salis. Marcello and Giovanni played in many internationally renowned festivals and concert seasons, including several Italian Cultural Institutes around the world. The duo has performed “Cenere” at the “European Film Festival” in Beirut, the “Sensorium” festival in Panjim, Goa, India, and the “8 1/2 Festa do Cinema Italiano” in Cascais, Portugal upon an invitation by the Italian Cultural Institutes in Beirut, Mumbai, and Lisbon. During 2016, year celebrating film “Cenere”’s 100th anniversary, the two musicians will present their Live soundtrack at several prestigious festivals and venues around the world. Next October they will be touring India, under an invitation by the Italian Cultural Institutes in Delhi and Mumbai.
This performance consists in two parts:
the music prologue to the film (duration 20 minutes) with compositions by Allulli, Ceccarelli, Jobim, Montoya, Rodriguez, Kern, Ramirez, and others;
the live soundtrack (duration 40 minutes) with music by Allulli and Ceccarelli.
The music draws its inspiration from jazz, Mediterranean soundscapes, free improvisation, and folk songs.
